Kings' School Hampshire Enterprise Board Game
On the 1st May 2008 the Hampshire Enterprise game was launched at the home of Hampshire County cricket-The Rose Bowl. Over the past 12 months King’s School on behalf of the Hampshire Enterprise Hub has, together with the two local Enterprise business partners (EBP’s), sought sponsorship from local businesses. The goal was to generate £25000 to develop and produce 500 Hampshire versions of an Enterprise game developed in Halton Merseyside. These games would then be made available free of charge to all schools in Hampshire for use in the delivery of their Enterprise education programmes.
The game takes approximately 1hr 20minutes to play and requires 4 players and a banker (ideally a person with business experience) who adopts the wider role of financial consultant. Unlike Monopoly the game involves many skills, testing player’s perseverance, creativity, ability to plan strategically, manage risks and cash flow along with problem solving and decision making. The objective of the game is to purchase production capacity, and then manage the production, sales storage and shipment of ‘stox’ to customers located around the board. Each of the local sponsors has their own space on the board and roads have been adapted to give a local feel. For example a trip down the M27 takes you to Ford. The winner of the game is the player who generates most profit when all the customers have bought ‘stox’.
The launch of the game saw several of the games sponsor’s playing the game with pupils from the Hampshire Enterprise Hub & Spoke schools. The atmosphere was electric as pupils sought to out manoeuvre each other and cope with unexpected events and debt management. The feedback from sponsors and pupils alike was ‘this is a great way to learn’.
The games are now freely available for use by any school in Hampshire. The games will be stored at 3 EBPs located in Southampton, Basingstoke, & Portsmouth. Up to 400 will be available at any one time free of charge for loan to any school. Before each school can have access to them their staff will need to be trained by their local EBP on how best to use the game within their enterprise programme. This will cost £200. Of this £100 will be paid by Kings’ school Winchester as the Hub for Hampshire. Once training has been completed the school can access the games free of charge as many times as they need to. To launch the game the first 4 schools in each of the EBP areas requesting training will receive it free of charge. The goal is to have the games used throughout the year by all schools in Hampshire.
